Why do many Koreans have less body odor? ABCC11 explained

Many Koreans carry an ABCC11 variant linked to dry earwax and much lower secretion of typical underarm-odor precursors. It does not mean no sweat, no smell, or every Korean.

The direct answer: a loss-of-function variant of the ABCC11 gene is especially common in Korea and other parts of Northeast Asia. People with two copies of that variant secrete far less of several characteristic underarm-odor precursors from apocrine glands. The same variant is strongly linked to dry, flaky earwax, which is why earwax and deodorant appear in the same genetics story.

But 'Koreans do not smell' is inaccurate. The finding is about typical axillary — underarm — odor, not every source of body odor. Koreans still sweat, individuals have different genotypes and microbiomes, and clothing, bacteria, hygiene, diet, illness, medication, feet, breath, and other body sites remain outside this one-gene explanation.

What ABCC11 changes under the arm

Human underarm odor is not simply sweat leaving the body. Apocrine glands release precursor molecules into the armpit, and skin bacteria transform some of them into volatile odorants. ABCC11 encodes a transporter involved in moving several of those precursors. The rs17822931 538G>A change can make that transporter nonfunctional when a person inherits the A variant from both parents.

Laboratory work found that AA carriers had a near-complete loss of several characteristic odor components and substantially reduced steroidal odorants and precursors. At least one functional G copy — GA or GG — restored the pathway for those components. That is a strong biological mechanism, not just a cultural observation about deodorant use.

ABCC11 is a major explanation for variation in characteristic axillary odor, not a universal on/off switch for human smell.

Why dry earwax is part of the same story

Ceruminous glands in the ear canal are related to apocrine glands, and the same ABCC11 variant strongly determines whether earwax tends to be wet and sticky or dry and flaky. AA is associated with the dry type; GA and GG with the wet type. A Japanese clinical study also found a very strong association between wet-earwax genotypes and axillary osmidrosis, the medical term used for pronounced underarm odor.

Older population estimates cited in that study put wet earwax at roughly 5% in Korea, compared with higher frequencies in many other regions. Treat that as population context, not a personal diagnosis: estimates depend on samples, ancestry is mixed, and looking at earwax is not a substitute for genetic or clinical assessment when there is an actual health concern.

Do Koreans sweat? Yes

The popular question often confuses sweat volume with odor chemistry. Eccrine glands make the watery sweat used for cooling, including during heat and exercise. The ABCC11 result concerns several precursors in apocrine secretions, so it does not make a person unable to sweat and does not make hot Seoul summers feel different at a genetic on/off level.

Even within the underarm, 'less characteristic odor' is more accurate than 'odorless.' Functional studies found that all genotypes can still produce some odoriferous short-chain fatty acids. Amounts, bacteria, clothing, stress, hormones, hygiene, and individual perception can all change the experience.

Why the nationality shortcut fails

The A variant is unusually frequent in Korea, which makes the population-level observation real. It still does not follow that every Korean has the AA genotype, that every non-Korean has a functional G copy, or that ancestry alone predicts a person you meet. Population frequency is not individual certainty.

The phrase 'Koreans have no body odor' also turns a specific biochemical trait into a cleanliness stereotype. Stronger or weaker characteristic axillary odor is not a measure of hygiene, health, attractiveness, or cultural superiority. It is one form of human variation, and people in every group manage their bodies in different ways.

What this can explain about deodorant culture

If many people in a market produce less baseline axillary odor, deodorant may feel less central to daily grooming and stores may historically give it less space. That is a plausible bridge from gene frequency to consumer culture, but product availability and social habits also change over time. A shop shelf cannot tell you anyone's genotype.

A large UK cohort found that deodorant use differed strongly by ABCC11 genotype, yet many people with the low-odor AA genotype still used deodorant. That study was not Korean; its useful lesson is that genetics does not dictate behavior. People may use deodorant for fragrance, moisture, routine, reassurance, or social expectation, and the choice remains personal.

The practical answer

If you were simply curious about a difference you noticed in Korea, ABCC11 provides a well-supported part of the answer: a common variant lowers several typical underarm-odor precursors and is linked to dry earwax. Add bacteria, environment, grooming, and individual variation, and the observation makes sense without turning it into a myth about an entire people.

Does every Korean have the low-odor ABCC11 variant?
